One of my nephews is in the process of learning appropriate ways to get someone’s attention. Although the goal is to “be patient” and “wait until your turn” Easton has found another approach that can yield success. While I am engaged in conversation with someone else he will place one hand on each of my cheeks and turn my head so that I’m facing his. It doesn’t take long for my eyes to catch up and at that moment he is convinced that he has my attention even if it’s just for a second.
At breakfast this morning a friend and mentor reminded me of how hard it can be to ignore God’s presence when watching the sun rise and set. Often throughout the Gospels Jesus has to redirect people’s attention toward God and what God is doing. Jesus follows a parable about seeds and soil with the phrase, “Whoever has ears for listening should pay attention.”
There are times when God’s presence appears to be more obvious than others, though most Christians would agree that God is always present. Perhaps it is in those hours between brilliant sunrises and beautiful sunsets where we need to ask ourselves, “Are my ears for listening?” “Are my eyes for seeing?”
