God Moments

Growing up I used the phrase “God moments” to describe those times in life when I felt closest to God.  They are those “Acts 2” moments when the presence of Holy Spirit is incredibly undeniable.  It’s in those times where we truly realize Kingdom Come.

All the other disciples just wanted Jesus to get in the boat, a very rational response given the strong headwind and waves.  Peter had a moment of spontaneity and was willing to join Jesus on the water…and Jesus was like, “Come on out!”  Peter finds that moment where he is literally with God doing something truly amazing.  He is walking on water—with Jesus—and let’s don’t forget that the waves make that water surface far from flat.  I wish we knew more about what was going on in Peter’s head…

My guess is that whatever thoughts Peter did have Peter’s “moment” ended when his brain went somewhere else.  Even with the coolest head he could have thought, “This would be even better without these waves.”

It is incredibly hard for us to be fully present.  In any given moment we are distracted by the past and the future and that causes us to miss most of what’s happening “right now.”

God is here with you right now.  The Holy Spirit is actively engaged in your life right now.  Jesus is inviting you to join Him right now.  It may not make sense, it may be slightly irrational, and it probably won’t play out like you expect…but that’s totally ok.  Let go, let God, be present.

“Peter replied, “Lord, if it’s you, order me to come to you on the water.” And Jesus said, “Come.” Then Peter got out of the boat and was walking on the water toward Jesus. But when Peter saw the strong wind, he became frightened. As he began to sink, he shouted, “Lord, rescue me!” Jesus immediately reached out and grabbed him, saying, “You man of weak faith! Why did you begin to have doubts?” When they got into the boat, the wind settled down.”
