When was the last time you played on a playground?
You’re probably wondering what that has to do with adventure but not every adventure ends with the summit of Everest. When we were children, a playground was a place of adventure teeming with challenging new opportunities to explore. Remember the first time you did that really high slide and everyone cheered you on. What a feeling of accomplishment!

I think that adventure is a necessity in our “walk” as disciples of Christ. God’s call to adventure is often hiding behind safety and stability but it is there. Adventures carry risk. They also deliver challenge, discomfort, and frustration so we tend avoid them. As children we stumble into the unpleasantries with our eyes fixed on something bigger…and we adventure on. As adults we “know better” but what we forget in our advised avoidance is that adventures lead us to find wisdom, understanding, and an indescribable feeling of accomplishment.

The truth is that we can minimize risk but we cannot eliminate it. We do our best learning when we are challenged and the Holy Spirit does great things with a little chaos. God has created for us the best playground ever and he is calling us to adventure.
Adventure, as a discipline, is something that most of us will have to work toward. Find ways to explore, learn to embrace challenge, and you will find new levels of appreciation for everything!
“At that very moment he called them. They followed him, leaving their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired workers.”
