Doubt

I spent about a week in the fifth grade attempting to solve the world’s energy crisis.  I had been introduced to the idea of a perpetual motion machine, basically something that, once started, would continue to run forever.  I was taught that this was not possible, but I attempted to build one anyway.  Maybe I should have listened to my teacher—it would have saved me the time and energy and my brain was in conflict for days over a problem that had already been solved. Still there was great value in the process and what I learned from it is now something I truly know.

Easter is one of my favorite times of the year.  I love getting together with family and friends and celebrating Jesus’ resurrection. We celebrate because we have the greatest news…Jesus has been raised from the dead!!!

When Thomas heard the news of Jesus’ resurrection he said that he wouldn’t believe it until he felt the wounds with his own hands. I think it is unfortunate that history has made Thomas’ doubt such a bad thing. Jesus does a lot of “impossible” things and Thomas certainly wasn’t the only follower that ever had doubt. If we want to know Jesus then we realistically should expect some level of disbelief because in knowing Christ we experience a whole new world of possibility.

“Then he said to Thomas, “ Put your finger here. Look at my hands. Put your hand into my side. No more disbelief. Believe! ”” ‭‭John‬ ‭20:27‬ ‭CEB‬‬

The goal of any disciple is to know and then change to become more like your teacher.  It is a process, and being a disciple of Christ is no exception.  If you find yourself having doubt…do not be afraid of it and don’t feel ashamed.  Thomas was tenacious in his request to know the resurrection first hand and Jesus let him feel the holes.  When we pursue the holes in our own belief Jesus will “show up” and be revealed until we truly know Him.

What do you believe and how determined are you to pursue the Truth?  The goal is to know Jesus so well, to become so familiar, that even when we can’t see…we believe!

“Jesus replied, “ Do you believe because you see me? Happy are those who don’t see and yet believe. ””. ‭‭John‬ ‭20:29‬ ‭CEB‬‬
