In the church playground there is a school bus set on springs that you can bounce around on. It is also my nephew, Easton’s, “milk truck” and it is no longer just for bouncing and delivering pretend ice-cream. The other day he wanted to see if it was possible to climb around outside of the cab so, being strategically cautious, Easton asked me to climb up on the front. I did it and Easton said, “I wish I could do that.”

“You can,” I replied, “just be careful and try it, if you get too scared, it is ok!” E climbed up on the front cautiously making sure that his hands and feet were firmly planted along the way. He arrived at his destination so very proud and we celebrated the victory. Then Easton started to move to another place on the outside of the bus and before long he had gone all the way around without touching the ground!
“Did you not know that I could do this Charlie?”
“I thought you could but now we both know you can!”
It is often during a challenge that we learn the most. Our “walk” with Jesus will take us to places where we feel challenged and where we discover that the impossible is possible. We will also find places where we feel comfortable to rest and celebrate where we are. In those places of comfort it is normal to want to stay…to keep both feet firmly planted in that place. We need to celebrate those places without forgetting that more is possible. When you feel that nudge, that gentle reminder, don’t forget that you are on a journey. God has more to show you. It is when we move from those places of rest that we discover more about God’s Kingdom and become impressed with what we are able to do with God. There will be many amazing places to rest along the way, you will want to stay at each one, but go and see what is next.
“Your life is a journey you must travel with a deep consciousness of God.” 1 Peter 1:18 MSG
Discipleship is a journey. There are great moments along the way to stop and rest in God’s presence but those places are not the destination. Be encouraged to keep the journey in focus and encourage others to do the same. God has a lot more to show us about ourselves and the Kingdom around us!
