Renew

A few weeks ago while riding a trail I got to watch a “controlled burn” in the forest. As trees grow, limbs die and fall to the ground. Trees die and fall to the ground. Over time old forested land accumulates a fair share of dead wood and during dry spells they become fire hazards. Naturally occurring forest fires are really hard to suppress and can have devastating consequences. With a controlled burn experts have the ability to select variables and ensure a safer fire.

Forest fires must happen.  They are part of the natural evolution removing waste, disease, etc.  Many trees actually need fire to reproduce.  It’s a cleansing process, an essential part of renewal and we, humans, have learned that controlled fire is better than fire out of control.

The other day I went into those woods that were burned. The green sprouting from scattered places all around me was the most vivid I have ever seen. Without the underbrush and debris the majesty of the trees was more pronounced and obvious. I could see with more clarity the shape of the forest floor. Just weeks before I had seen those woods engulfed in flames and these signs of renewal were truly awesome.

Disciples of Jesus need a constant state of renewal. ‘Don’t be conformed to the patterns of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds so that you can figure out what God’s will is—what is good and pleasing and mature. ‘ Romans 12:2.

Like a forest fire, our path of discipleship has beautiful moments and moments of destructive loss. We should be intentional about removing the debris and we need to remember the Hope that will spring from it. The beauty of the crucifixion is that through Jesus’ sacrifice we can clear the “undergrowth.” A clearer path is always ahead with many budding signs of Hope. Jesus offers a controlled burn whenever we recognize that we need it. What are you willing to release your grip on to gain clarity? What things make it most difficult to see the path God lays before you? Let go of distractions and gain a beautifully renewed perspective!
