One of my favorite quotes from the family vacation last week was, “Pop-Pop really knows a lot.”
It all started on a beach walk Saturday morning when one of my five nephews found some “really cool” seaweed. Dad (aka Pop-Pop) somehow convinced them to taste some of it. My father had only just begun to lead the boys toward adventure.
Later that day my dad presented a plate of freshly steamed oysters sitting on a bed of really “cool seaweed.” The boys surrounded him filled with excitement and curiosity. They soaked up every minute of the experience. Easton loved prying the shells open, Parker and Harry loved eating them and just as Dad shared the rarity of occurrence…Harrison discovered a tiny crab…and Parker ate it. I told Harrison later that evening how cool I thought their adventures were, a real cascade of “carpe diem” moments. Harry responded, “Pop-pop really knows alot.”

Jesus knows everything. Even the people who didn’t recognize Jesus as God saw great wisdom and wanted to learn from Him. Everyone who followed Jesus, and listened, learned that God’s knowledge was far greater than our own.
“This is because the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.” 1 Corinthians 1:25 CEB
The boys will always remember their first oysters and the great adventure with “Pop-Pop.” My dad will cherish the memory as well. The oysters were delicious but the greatest value was in the sharing of knowledge and experience.
My nephews didn’t know that they could eat the seaweed they found. They had no concept of the experience of eating steamed oysters. They approached the unknown with full confidence in my father’s knowledge and their perspective of what was possible was broadened forever.
There is a lot that we don’t know. God is offering to share, to lead us toward new experience and greater understanding. Often we forget how little we know. We avoid the unknown and our perspective remains more limited than it could be.
The people who didn’t follow Jesus had already made up their minds. They already knew everything. Be eager to follow, to venture with confidence into your unknown because God still has much to show you!
