Survive

Once, many years ago, I went backpacking with a tent that was broken. I was at the campsite, deep into the wilderness, setting up my tent when I discovered the broken pole. I had to figure out how to “rig” the tent so that it could work because we were expecting bad weather. We had storms and rain the entire weekend and unfortunately the tent did not work properly. That trip gave me a whole new appreciation for the importance of staying dry and being properly prepared.

I do love being in the wilderness.  Venturing out into the wild and exploring new places has helped me to discover wonderful things and gain unique perspectives.  Some of my most challenging ventures—those ones I “survived”—actually taught me the most.  To be clear, I am not saying that I ever want to hike into the woods with a broken tent again…but I’m thankful for what I learned that one time I did.

Wilderness is, by definition, an inhospitable environment.  Entering it, we sacrifice more than just the comforts of home…we forfeit significant control as well.  When the environment becomes too inhospitable, often due to circumstances beyond our control, a lack of preparedness, or some combination of the two, we enter a mode of survival.

Survival takes skill. You need to really learn to recognize the value of everything around you. What’s helpful and what is harmful? You really have to keep your head in the game because the consequences can be devastating. In that process you gain a whole new level of appreciation for things you may previously have taken for granted.

“His disciples responded, “How can anyone get enough food in this wilderness to satisfy these people?””  ‭‭Mark‬ ‭8:4‬ ‭CEB‬‬

Jesus’ disciples thought His request was hopeless. You want us to feed everyone yet here we are surrounded by nothing. At the end of that day there was more than enough. No one went home hungry.

When your wilderness is obvious and much is beyond your control…when you feel like you are scrambling for survival, try to recognize the value of everything around you.

Even in the desolation, we are surrounded by Hope. Survive better by discovering new greatness around you and trust that, in time, you will find Joy by celebrating blessings previously unnoticed!
