Build

Lego, arguably one of the greatest toys of all time, has played a significant role throughout my life.  I’ll always remember the sound of the bricks rolling around in the bucket as I sift through in search of that one piece I need to complete my project.

We always had containers of assorted Legos.  When I discovered that Lego actually made “sets” there was a castle theme that particularly caught my attention.  Several of those sets made my Christmas list that year, and to my excitement one was under the tree!  As we concluded the morning “gifting” I could not wait to build it.

It took me about an hour to complete the project and when I was finished, sitting there on the floor was a medieval bridge with a tower and some knights!  I played with them for a while and enjoyed the completed build but nothing compared to the experience of actually creating it.  That set, along with several others would eventually end up as scattered pieces in various buckets, each providing a wide array of options for future creative builds.

There have been many Lego sets under Christmas trees throughout my life, and I have enjoyed building every one of them.  Those projects don’t last long because—although they are neat when completed—true greatness awaits in the process of creating and building something new.

God doesn’t call us to a mediocre existence.  Our purpose, which is intricately linked with our Creator, is much greater, but often we get stuck.  In order to embrace greatness we often have to be willing to loosen our hold on—or dismantle—some of what we have already built into our lives.  In that process we free the pieces needed to construct something even better.

‘These things were my assets, but I wrote them off as a loss for the sake of Christ. ‘ Philippians 3:7

It’s a new year, a time of renewal. You are invited to lean into God’s call, to live into a purpose that is specifically “great” for you. That purpose is never a “one and done” project but rather, is always evolving. What are you willing to put in your bucket? What will you and God work with this year? Perhaps now is the time to loosen your grip on some things in the efforts to contribute to great new ones
