Igloo

The day following our last big snow I ran into some neighbors walking up the now scraped clear road that hosted our sledding the day before.  I said something about the loss of our sled spot and they asked me if I had seen the igloo yet.

Down in the park at the end of our street, a neighbor had constructed a massive igloo.  This was a huge project!  My father and I took two of my nephews to see it.  It was large and solid enough to support four kids who were actually standing on top of it when we arrived.

There were signs everywhere that this igloo had become a special place.  Seven or eight tiny snowmen had been built in a circle around it.  Kids had created steps on one side and a few different routes on other sides for sliding down.  Dead tree branches emerged from various spots and the floor inside the igloo was brown with mud.  At the end of the following day some smaller snow forts had been constructed for what I would guess to be a great snowball battle.

Over several days, the kids in our neighborhood gathered, played, and created.  A ton of work went into constructing that igloo, first piling up all that snow and then digging out the center.   I imagine that at some point about halfway through building an igloo like that I would be asking myself if it was worth it.  Fortunately the builder pressed on, his igloo was epic, and it had a great impact on our community.

God is constantly calling us toward something great.  It starts as a nudge or an idea and even before we pick up the shovel we are often rationalizing away from it.  Big projects require investment and take time and there are moments where we will entertain the idea of just quitting.  When we are done we will wonder what God will do with it all and we will hope that our efforts make the world better.

“The goal I pursue is the prize of God’s upward call in Christ Jesus.” ‭‭Philippians‬ ‭3:14‬ ‭CEB‬‬

Following God’s call isn’t always simple because our Creator loves epic endeavors. When God calls you to something great don’t be discouraged and don’t walk away from it. Hold tightly to your faith and press forward because it is there that greatness begins.
