Refresh

When I am home on weekends I always have the opportunity to join my dad and his buddies for breakfast at a local grill. Those guys have been mentors for me since I was young and the Saturday morning breakfast has been a tradition for many years. I remember as a child being empowered with the responsibility of refilling the coffee mugs. It was a task I took very seriously and I still enjoy noticing when one of the mugs gets low and filling them all back to the top. Last Saturday while I was engaged in conversation, “Doc” brought the pot over to refill our mugs. Since I was busy talking, my mug was nearly full, but Doc added a little more, saying, “Might as well warm it for you.”

We all approach each moment of every day with a different level of fullness. We could be empty, full, and most likely somewhere in between. Noticing someone’s level of emptiness is rarely constructive but a little extra is always helpful. Even if it’s just to “refresh” a little renewal is always good.

The phrase “What’s wrong with this picture?” is familiar to most of us. You may have seen puzzles or quizzes with an image or drawing asking you to figure out what is out of place or wrong. Effective critical analysis includes identifying what is good, but we are often too quick to begin to notice what is wrong and in the search we can lose focus on what is right.

“Now is the time! Here comes God’s kingdom! Change your hearts and lives, and trust this good news!” Mark‬ ‭1:15‬ ‭CEB‬‬

Life is best “full-filled” but each day will deliver draining encounters which leave people with varying levels of emptiness. We have the best news of all, truth which overflows, and everyone we meet can use a little more Joy and more Hope! Direct your attention to what is GOOD, and be ready to refill others. Even your efforts to just add a little splash to an already full cup is a solid investment.
