My family has been spending a week together at the beach for as long as I can remember. It has become a time where I pay particular attention to many things for which I am most thankful. Surrounding the overwhelmingly amazing, like family, are so many little blessings. For instance, I love having my toes in the sand but I don’t love being sandy, so I am also thankful that the ocean is right there ready to rinse my sandy feet.

I like to ride my Onewheel barefoot. Floating shoeless inches above pavement at fifteen miles per hour is risky, but I love it. A couple of years ago, on the eve of our family beach week, I crashed hard–barefoot. It was bound to happen at some point but the timing was particularly inconvenient. I now had road rash on my left foot, just in time for sand and salty water. Every day of that week, with great persuasion from all my nephews, my injured foot was painfully immersed in sand and salt water. I remained thankful that I was at the beach, but that week required me to alter my approach toward the blessings of sand and salt water.

We are always surrounded by things worthy of appreciation and gratitude.  It is better to adjust our approach to those blessings than to avoid them.  We all experience seasons that feel void of hope and certainty, and in those times of challenge we must still focus on the blessings!

“Don’t you have eyes? Why can’t you see? Don’t you have ears? Why can’t you hear? Don’t you remember?”  ‭‭Mark‬ ‭8:18‬ ‭CEB‬‬

Often distractions are upfront and unavoidable but that which is truly Good is steadfast. Jesus often encouraged His followers to redirect their attention to the amazing and we are encouraged to do the same even when it is hard–even when it is painful. Strive to look beyond distractions and become immersed in the amazing that surrounds you.
