Bonk

Prior to the holidays we had a streak of cold, wet, and windy weather.  I spent my time those days reminding myself not to be frustrated with the forecast while remaining hopeful for the inevitable sunny days ahead.

The sun was shining brightly on the day the weather began to change and I could hardly contain my excitement as I hopped onto my Onewheel to go for a ride.  Due to the high winds on previous days, branches and sticks were scattered all over the roads and I quickly found myself enjoying the new obstacles.

This time last year I would not have embraced the obstacle of sticks in the road as easily as today.  Back then I would have avoided them or moved them out of my path.  One of the skills I learned during 2022 is how to “bonk.”  Learning to bonk opened up a world of new opportunities on rides.

So what is a bonk?  A bonk on a Onewheel (similar to an “ollie” on a skateboard) is when you approach an object at the right speed, angle, and timing allowing the board to pop up into the air and over the obstacle.  This skill is both really fun and quite difficult to learn.

Often we approach life hoping that there will be no obstacles.  Life without obstacles is unrealistic but we can put our hope in the promise of the way we will deal with the obstacles we face.  Learning to bonk shifted my perspective and things I once saw as obstacles became opportunities.  Be encouraged as you face obstacles in your path.  Know that you are not alone and that with persistence and determination and faith, you can improve how you approach and encounter each obstacle!

Romans 5:3-4 CEB

3 But not only that! We even take pride in our problems, because we know that trouble produces endurance, 4 endurance produces character, and character produces hope.
