The other day my nephew was not feeling well. It had been a hot and humid day and we had played hard outside most of the afternoon. My first thought was that given the circumstances of our day a little water couldn’t hurt. I gave him some water and told him, “Sip it—just a little every now and then until you start feeling better.”
I have always been told that when dehydrated it is better to sip water. I’ve also heard that it is better if the water is room temperature. Growing up I spent a lot of time outside, especially in the summer. On a hot day I would savor every second of cold water I could squeeze out of a brief encounter with a water fountain. Gulping as much cold water as possible may not have been best…but it was so great in the moment.
When people share their faith stories I often hear something to the effect of, “God was always there when I needed Him.” This is true but we should ask ourselves, “When do we need God?” I think we always need God and that “thirst” is best quenched by regular sipping. That cold water fountain on a hot day is truly a blessing but when it comes to our relationship with God it’s more like having a bottomless Camelback.
The best discipline—keep sipping.
Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks from the water that I will give will never be thirsty again. The water that I give will become in those who drink it a spring of water that bubbles up into eternal life.”
John 4:13-14 CEB
