How salty are you?

In the 14th Chapter of the Gospel of Luke Jesus is teaching discipleship.  At one point He describes a feast in which many of the invitees have other plans.  It’s like everyone wants to go to the feast but they can’t because they are being pulled in other directions.  Sound familiar?  We are constantly being pulled in other directions and even in quarantine I’ll admit it’s easy to get “too busy.”

I would say that perhaps one of our biggest challenges in being disciples of Christ is our lack of confidence in what God can do through us.  God has invited us to the feast.  He is not asking us to bring a dish.  He isn’t asking us to help set the table.  There isn’t even a dress code.  God’s only request of us is our presence.  We just have to show up.  Although we default to many excuses, I think more than that we are afraid that we are just not prepared.

“Salt is good. But if salt loses its flavor, how will it become salty again?”

‭‭Luke‬ ‭14:34‬ ‭CEB‬‬

How “salty” are you?  Let me be clear that although the term “salty” has become synonymous with anger, Jesus uses it to mean flavor.  It’s that edge.  It’s when others see God through you.  Do you know one of those people?  Someone who makes you notice God’s presence more than anything else?  How many of us are waiting to be like that, to be that salty, before we attend the feast?

“Catch me next time around.”

The more we wait to be salty enough, the less salty we will be because the trick to saltiness is to simply abide in Him.

  1. I actually have a note by that passage in one of my old Bibles with your name on it! You had shared a message with the DUMC youth about salt on one of your last days…many years but I still remember! Lots of love to you buddy!
