Forecast

One of my most frequently used apps is a weather app and it is one of my least favorites.  I should probably delete it.  Today it said the sun was supposed to be out by now and it is not…yet.

I prefer to be outside and while I am quite familiar with various methods to stay dry and warm I definitely appreciate the convenience of a warm dry day.  A forecast helps me plan ahead which is quite beneficial during cold, wet seasons as I attempt to seize the best opportunities to be outside.

I won’t be deleting the app anytime soon because my frustration with it has nothing to do with the app itself. I just get frustrated when the forecast is not right but honestly, most of the time, it is remarkably accurate. The weather app is one of my least favorites simply because I pay more attention to the fact that it is wrong occasionally than I do toward it’s overall helpfulness.

(Mark 5:21-43)

In the fifth chapter of Mark, Jesus is on his way to the home of an “influential” guy named Jarius’ to heal his sick daughter. Everyone is in a rush to save the girl and within this haste Jesus takes the time to heal another individual. Most are frustrated with Jesus, some even giving up on the initial quest all together. Jarius’ daughter ends up being healed and everyone is shocked.

‘While Jesus was still speaking with her, messengers came from the synagogue leader’s house, saying to Jairus, “Your daughter has died. Why bother the teacher any longer?” ‘. Mark 5:35 (CEB)

There was greatness in the miracle that happened along the way but most of the people who were gathered probably missed the glory of that healing because they were more focused on what Jesus wasn’t doing than what He was.

That weather app is actually quite helpful. I will surely forget that the next time it is wrong but perhaps I will also be quicker to remember and be grateful. It is a process, but learning to appreciate things in times of frustration is worth the struggle.

God is always doing great things. At times we will find ourselves distracted, our attention being drawn in many different directions. Sometimes even the expectation of what God is going to do can be a distraction from what God is doing right now. Redirecting our attention to God’s greatness is a growing edge for all of us and that in itself is good news. We can get better at it and this is a pursuit worth every effort.
